Hydration for Horses - Spillers Perform & Restore Mash

Monday 18th July 2022

With temperatures soaring, keeping your horse (and yourself!) hydrated should be a top priority. Fresh grass contains approximately 80% water and under normal circumstances, goes a long way in meeting requirements for horses turned out to pasture, but scorched grass can reduce the amount of water your horse consumes through grazing. Free access to fresh water is of course essential but did you know your choice of feed could help to support hydration too?

Feeding a wet mash such as SPILLERS Perform & Restore Mash will help to increase your horse’s water intake. However, feeding a mash may also encourage your horse to drink more!

Horses tend to drink around meal times and in particular after eating, which means not eating may lead to reduced drinking. Getting too hot may lead to a reduced appetite but SPILLERS Perform & Restore Mash includes a delicious apple aroma to tempt your horse’s taste buds.

Just like humans, horses need electrolytes help to maintain water balance – drinking alone will not rehydrate your horse effectively after significant fluid loss through exercise. Feeding SPILLERS Perform & Restore Mash helps to replace some of the electrolytes lost through sweating, however you may need to feed additional salt or an electrolyte supplement depending on your horse's base diet and how much they sweat.

If you require further nutrition advice, the Spillers Care Line is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm.
